Racines

[Series of 7 digital photographs.]

Through its branches and roots, a tree gradually occupies space. It reaches upward, anchors itself in the earth, and extends its territory. These images focus on roots as vital organs of the tree: spreading in every direction, they make their way through and across the soil, holding the plant in place and allowing it to draw the water it needs.

Without leaves or buds, a root nevertheless evokes life with a particular force. Its growth reveals the plant’s slow, continuous movement. Removed from the context of their trees and photographed in in dark tones, these roots make visible a movement we usually imagine taking place underground. The roots emerge from the earth and continue their path through space, driven by the need to survive.\

An excerpt from this series was published in Écart, the first publication by the Diaph 8 Collective.
